Earlier this week, Opower received the World Wildlife Fund’s WWF Green Game-Changes Innovation of the Year Award, at the 2013 BusinessGreen Leaders Awards reception in London.
Now in their third year, the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards convened top sustainability executives, business leaders, and political leaders to showcase game-changing technologies and business models that directly contribute to the UK’s goal of cutting emissions 80 percent by 2050. With this in mind, the judges recognized the potential of Opower’s customer engagement platform to save energy and substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“As the winner of this special award for innovation, Opower demonstrated how its unique software platform is helping to turn the smart grid into a reality, engaging with consumers to help them save energy and cut emissions,” said James Murray, Editor of BusinessGreen. “The judges were impressed by the way the company is combining the latest thinking in behavioral psychology and big data analytics to deliver real world environmental benefits.”
Since 2007, Opower has become an industry trendsetter, working with 85 utilities and empowering 16 million households worldwide with personalized energy insights. To date, we have helped consumers save over 2.6 terawatt hours of energy – which translates to $300 million dollars, or £194 million British pounds, in energy bill savings.
This award also comes hot on the heels of other recent recognitions of Opower’s impact, including its selection as a 2013 Bloomberg New Energy Finance Pioneer in April and its appearance on the inaugural CNBC Disruptor 50 List in May.
