The University of California at Davis has been recognized as the “greenest” college in the country, according to an annual ranking published this week by the environmental organization Sierra Club.
The Sierra Club evaluated 96 schools across 11 distinct categories of environmental performance, including an energy category. Although UC Davis was not the highest performer on energy in particular (University of Connecticut was), it does boast a range of impressive clean-energy initiatives.
Among other things, UC Davis was commended for its $39 million efficient lighting project that will help slash campus electricity usage 60% by 2015, four nationally-recognized green buildings (including the school’s very own winery/brewery facility), and 49 natural-gas powered buses carrying 21,000 riders per day.
